Sarteano is a village of 4.700 inhabitants, situated at about 600 mt asl, as part of the mount Cetona chain. it is between the fertile Val di Chiana and the evocative Val d’Orcia. this is a fascinating area in the province of Siena, rich in history, art, wine and gastronomy. Sarteano is a rich archeological area, which boasts some important Etruscan tombs, the most interesting of which is the one called ‘la tomba della quadriga infernale’: dated back to the iv century b.c., it presents extraordinary well preserved pictures. a wide collection of Etruscan finds are displayed at the Etruscan museum of Sarteano. the medieval origins of the town can also be traced to the castle, dominating the landscape and its beautiful churches. it was recently honored with the ‘bandiera arancione’(orange flag) by the Italian Touring Club for high environmental and tourist standards. all the hill towns and villages in the surrounding area offer a detailed range of aspects, able to surprise the visitor. it could be a church, a square, a breathtaking landscape or simply a portal.
